Job Search Tips

Being a senior, I’ve been struggling to find full-time jobs.

I don’t quite understand how it makes sense for the job market to be this tough right now. I’ve already applied for over 100 jobs, but I still can’t seem to find one that feels like the right fit for my career. We still have two and a half months left before graduation, so there’s time to prepare, but what are some tips we can share with each other to help find the right employer?
Honestly, I’m starting to wonder, why is it so hard for us to find jobs right now?

As I search, here are some tips I’m giving myself to stay prepared during this process, things I’ve learned from my own experience so far:

✅ Upload Your Resume
✅ Update LinkedIn
✅ Make Connections
✅ Prepare for Interviews
✅ CONNECT. CONNECT. CONNECT!

Let’s start with the resume:

It’s crucial to have an updated resume that’s tailored to the specific job you’re applying for. As a marketing major, I’ve realized I can expand my skills and apply to roles in sales, marketing, and other areas too. Marketing isn’t just marketing, there’s social media, management, research, public relations, and so much more. Target your resume for the job you want, but stay open-minded about the different paths you can take within your field.

Update LinkedIn:

We all know how important it is to have an up-to-date, professional LinkedIn profile during your job search. There are so many employers, students, and professionals on there who can help you build connections and even land job opportunities that align with your career goals.
One thing I’ve learned: it doesn’t matter who the person is, if you find someone who inspires you or works in an area you’re interested in, reach out! Be confident. Shoot your shot. Ask questions about what they do, you never know how they might help you succeed.

Get connections:

Connections make a huge difference. Try to build a network based on your career interests. For example, if you want to get into social media marketing, go to local professional events or networking opportunities. I’ve done this, and through my internship, I’ve already gained so many local connections and I’m still working to grow them! These relationships can open doors.

Prepare for interviews:

Why should we prepare? Well… do you want to be in an interview and not know what to say? I know I don’t! Even if you don’t feel super confident, just be yourself and practice. Practice with a friend, have them act as the employer, and ask you questions about the role you want. The more you practice, the more comfortable and natural you’ll feel when it’s the real thing.

CONNECTIONS (yes, again!):

Okay, I might be exaggerating, but seriously, connections can make all the difference in your job search. Whether it’s professors, alumni, professionals, or anyone in the business world, it’s crucial to build those relationships.
Why? Because we’re all human, and honestly, people are more likely to trust and help someone they already know. If an employer had to choose between hiring someone they’ve connected with versus a random applicant, they’ll probably go with the person they know.

These are just a few things I’ve learned from my experience so far. Of course, it’s also important to maintain balance, stay healthy, socialize, and take breaks. Not everything will go perfectly, but there’s always another opportunity around the corner.

What about you? What are your tips for me, or for other students who want to be successful in their job search?
